November in East Texas signals the start of the holiday season, and for many, that means a trip to the annual Bear Creek Smokehouse Thanksgiving Market. This year, my girlfriend Jennifer and I made the easy drive to Marshall, Texas, last Saturday, November 15th, eager to experience one of my favorite local traditions.

We arrived around one, following the scent of hickory smoke that was in the air over Highway 80. The festive atmosphere was immediate. The dining area was alive with the sound of a live band, setting a vibrant, yet relaxed, mood that perfectly complemented the hearty fare.

Lunch was the main attraction. The buffet was streamlined, and I appreciated the efficiency of heading directly to the carving station. The man behind the block was clearly a master butcher—confident, experienced, and ensuring every patron received a perfectly hand-sliced cut of prime meat. The quality was superb. I can confidently say the hot links were exceptional, easily ranking among the best I have ever tasted, and the smoky, flavorful turkey salad added variety and flavor to our meal.

After satisfying our appetite, we began to shop at the market. A variety of vendors populated the surrounding grounds, showcasing everything from unique Christmas gifts and handmade crafts to specialty goods. This diverse selection of local artisans and businesses added a genuine, festive dimension to the entire day, turning lunch into a wonderful holiday shopping experience.

One of the most memorable parts of the day was meeting the current owner, Robbie Shoults. He took the time to stop to ask genuinely about our meal and experience—a simple gesture that spoke volumes about his commitment to customer satisfaction. The food was outstanding, but this personal interaction made the day truly special.

When I asked Robbie about the obvious effort required to put together such a large-scale event, he graciously deferred credit, emphasizing, “It takes the whole team.” This humble acknowledgment of his staff perfectly embodies the family values that have characterized the Shoults-owned Bear Creek since its inception.

As we departed, a quote of his displayed nearby left a lasting impression: “Happiness is getting to go to work every day with the ones we love most” It’s a powerful statement that beautifully captures the warm, welcoming, and deeply rooted family atmosphere that makes the Bear Creek Smokehouse experience so cherished.
