What an incredible evening my girlfriend and I had at Gladewater’s “Sounds Of Christmas Open House” this past Saturday, November 8th! Downtown Gladewater was absolutely buzzing, transformed into a breathtaking winter wonderland, and we were right in the thick of it all. This annual event, crafted by the dedicated Gladewater Chamber of Commerce, truly lived up to its reputation as the official kickoff to the Christmas season.

The moment we arrived, we could feel the festive energy. Public works personnel had done an outstanding job, hanging decorations hot on the heels of Halloween, and the historic downtown was completely glowing. The air was filled with excitement as we strolled through the historic streets. All the downtown shops were open late, a true treat for us Christmas shoppers, and believe me, we took full advantage! The storefronts were beautifully decorated, creating such a warm and inviting atmosphere that was practically irresistible.

The Heart of the Holiday Action

Chamber dynamo Lois Reed finalized a truly spectacular open house! We got to experience several of the amazing features she had planned, starting with the beautiful sounds of the strolling Christmas Carolers. They made their way through the busy streets, their voices ringing out, until they finally settled near the Christmas tree just in time for the main event.

For the kids—and the young at heart—there were activities everywhere. Down on South Main Street, we noticed a delightful holiday playground area sponsored by Karla Byrd, complete with popcorn and even ice cream. And, of course, the special mailbox for letters sent directly to Santa sat prominently in the downtown area, a constant reminder that the big man himself was on his way!

Adding a classic, enchanting touch to the evening were the horse-drawn carriage rides, sponsored by The Gladewater Chamber of Commerce. The gentle sound of hooves clip-clopping on the pavement really transported us to a bygone era. We also saw some familiar faces adding to the fun, including the talented Gladewater High School Honey Bears participating in the holiday kick-off!

The anticipation built steadily, especially around the impressive 24-foot Christmas tree. At two minutes before six o’clock, Gladewater Mayor, Brandy Flannigan, made a special announcement, welcoming everyone to the Open House and proclaiming it the official beginning of the holiday season.

Then, exactly at 6 p.m., we witnessed the highlight of the evening: the lighting of the enormous 24-foot downtown Christmas Tree! It was a truly magical moment as the thousands of lights flared to life, casting a spectacular glow over the entire downtown area. With DJ Randy spinning classic Christmas carols in downtown Gladewater, the scene was absolutely perfect.
